What is Unknown?
Almost everything! Primarily what is unknown is what the object is and what it was used for. There are some details about its composition and manufacture (it seems someone previously tried to find out what this was by writing to the manufacturer, but they didn’t know either!), and it’s provenance is relatively certain compared with other objects in the collection in that it most likely relates directly to Galton himself (there are lots of objects in the collection – like the hair gauge, for example – that post-date Galton himself and relate to the laboratory instead).
