Not an "Anaconda" Skeleton
Dublin Core
Title
Not an "Anaconda" Skeleton
Subject
A skeleton that is misidentified as an Anaconda [Eunectes murinus]. It is one of Grant Museum's “top ten objects” and features in Kingdom in A Cabinet [skeleton: Mounted skeleton]
Description
What is Unknown?
Why and how this item came to be labelled an anaconda. Its not. This specimen came to UCL from London Zoo in the 1960s. The former museum curator Roy Mahoney (and four generations of museum staff) remembered clearly that the specimen came from the London Zoo prosectorium identified as an anaconda. Possibly an African rock python.
Is it on display?
Yes. This has always been catalogued and placed on display as an Anaconda, but following a query from a member of the public, we now know it to be an African rock python (Python sebae). Despite this fact it remains labelled an anaconda.
